Fly With Xirli worked as a Race Director at the Catalan Hike & Fly League 2025 in Bellmunt

This past April 12th, I had the pleasure of participating as race director in an exciting new round of the Catalan Hike & Fly League 2025, held in Bellmunt, a beautiful village in the province of Barcelona.
With more than ten years of experience collaborating in the organization of paragliding competitions across Catalonia, it’s always an honor to support events that bring pilots together to enjoy our skies in a safe and structured way. This kind of work combines my two great passions: flying and logistics. And no matter how complex the organization may be, my greatest satisfaction comes from making sure each pilot is looked after and completes the race safely and with confidence.

Briefing and Flight Equipment Preparation

The day began with the traditional briefing, a key briefing where the pilots received details about the weather, the flight route, and safety regulations. The strategy for the race was explained, with particular emphasis on how the weather would affect both the hike and the flight. Safety is always our top priority, and ensuring that all pilots fully understand the conditions is critical to the success of the race.

A Unique Day of Flying and Community

This edition brought together 23 pilots in a fantastic atmosphere, coinciding with the legendary Cursa dels Matxos, a tough mountain footrace running through the Bellmunt area. The result was a thrilling day—intense on the ground and in the air—where physical endurance, flight skill, and smart strategy all played a key role.

The Route: Hike and Fly in the Heart of Osona

The race kicked off at 8:30 a.m. from the center of Torelló. From there, the pilots hiked up to Gargantes, then continued climbing to the Bellmunt Sanctuary, where a selfie with anyone was required as proof of passage.
From Bellmunt, the course included a total of seven waypoints: Gargantes – Bellmunt Sanctuary (selfie checkpoint) – Molí de la Riera – Gargantes (again) – Puig Àguila – Return to the finish line in Torelló, passing through the official Matxos race arch.

Scoring and Ranking

The rules were simple and clear: the first pilot to complete all waypoints in the correct order and reach the goal was the winner. If any waypoint was skipped, the ranking was determined based on the last checkpoint reached within the time window.
Once a participant reached the goal, they had to sign the board with the time used to complete the course. By signing, they confirmed that they agreed with the time assigned by the race director for their performance.

Flying With Care

As race director, what I value most is being able to take care of the pilots from start to finish—from the moment they arrive to the last safe landing. Every decision is guided by a commitment to their safety, enjoyment, and peace of mind. Watching them fly, hike, and smile with that mix of focus and freedom is what makes this work so meaningful.
The energy, camaraderie, and shared passion throughout the day created a race to remember. I’m truly thankful to all the pilots, volunteers, and friends who made it happen.
We’ll continue working to make this sport more accessible, inclusive, and safe with every new edition. See you at the next one!
